New technique to detect type 2 diabetes

Soon finished needles to diagnose type 2 diabetes!
A cell phone and a little bit of your saliva will soon be enough to detect the disease.

This new screening technique was developed by Mexican researchers from the Monterrey TEC and American University of Houston. They presented their invention on October 31st in a Mexican science journal, just weeks before World Diabetes Day on November 14th.

Reducing medical costs for patients and the state

Scientists have developed a device capable of detecting type 2 diabetes in a saliva sample. This tool could both improve the screening of disadvantaged populations and facilitate the lives of patients.

Early diagnosis of diabetes could avoid potential complications. This invention would also have the advantage of reducing medical costs for the population and the government.

A few seconds is enough to know the diagnosis

To make the device work, nothing is simpler: a micro-cartridge containing a sample of saliva is inserted into the smartphone. A few seconds later, the phone indicates whether the saliva analyzed contains traces of diabetes.

If this is the case, the biomarker of diabetes contained in the saliva becomes fluorescent under the effect of an enzymatic reaction. "It's as simple as a pregnancy test that displays results in seconds," says Dr. Marco Antonio Rite Palomares, project coordinator. Note that the device is still under development.

Type 2 diabetes affects 9% of adults worldwide, or 285 million people and causes death every seven seconds.

This screening device could significantly reduce the mortality associated with this disease.
